Unlike guilt, which is individualized, shame has a social dimension. Guilt might make you use a canvas tote bag at the store or recycle the mountain of disposable containers in your kitchen; if properly implemented, shame could cause companies to manufacture less plastic in the first place.

We've always had gossip as a form of shaming, but it now has such scale and speed and the results can be pretty ugly and undesirable. We need to take a step back and ask: "Is this how I want to spend my attention"; and "who deserves to be a victim of something this severe?"
