Storm Ascher is an American art curator, artist and writer.[1] She is known for non-traditional gallery spaces and art with contemporary social issues.[2]
She has been published as an art critic and writer includingThe Miami Times,The Los Angeles Times,Hyperallergic and The New York Times.[3]
Before launching her own curatorial program, she has worked with David Lewis Gallery and Spruth Magers.She has curated exhibitions for the Pérez Art Museum, Southampton African American Museum and PHILLIPS.[4] She has been recognized in Artsy's New Generation of Black Women Gallerists and featured on Dan's Papers' East End Power List.
Education and career[edit]
Ascher holds a BFA in Visual & Critical Studies from the School of Visual Arts (2018) and an MA in Art Business from Sotheby’s Institute and Claremont Graduate University (2020).[5]
After graduation she started working at David Lewis Gallery and Spruth Magers.[6] After starting her career as a painter and sculptor, she established the nomadic Superposition Gallery in 2018.[7] She has since curated works from over 100 diverse artists and organized exhibitions in museums, auction houses, public landmarks, and international art fairs.[8]
She has curated for the Eastville Museum, Phillips, Southampton African American Museum, and Oolite Arts in Miami, and was named a Forbes 30 Under 30 Honoree in 2022.[9]
Ascher has curated exhibitions featuring artists, including Derrick Adams,Tomashi Jackson and Che Lovelace. Her curatorial work focuses on social consciousness, urban development, and cultural diversity, using non-traditional gallery spaces to address contemporary social issues.[10]
Ascher founded The Hamptons Black Arts Council, a non-profit promoting the Black art institutions in New York State.[11]
