Anthony Masake is a Ugandan human rights advocate and social justice activist, currently serving as the acting executive director of Chapter Four Uganda, a human rights organization.[1][2]

Anthony is a 2023 Fellow of the Fisher Family Summer Fellows Program at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL), Stanford University.

Career[edit]

Anthony has played a significant role at Chapter Four Uganda, an organization known for upholding civil liberties and human rights. Masake assumed the position of acting executive director after the arrest and subsequent departure of the previous director, Nicholas Opiyo.[3] With his guidance, Chapter Four Uganda resumed its operations and continues to advocate for human rights and justice in Uganda. He is also the president of GreenDeal and organization that defends environmental human rights defenders.[4]

Apart from his legal and human rights work, Anthony is also known for being a socio-political blogger. He writes about human rights and political issues in Uganda, with his articles being published in local dailies like the Daily Monitor and New Vision, as well as various online platforms such as Africa Blogging. His writing often discusses the challenges faced by human rights in Uganda and the broader socio-political context.[5]

Before joining Chapter Four Uganda, Anthony worked as a Legal Aid for Uganda Law Society (ULS).[1]

Legal and Human Rights Work[edit]

Masake has experience in legal aid, human rights, and environmental matters. He has been involved in advocating for access to justice, fair trials, and civil liberties for over a decade. His work includes conducting trainings and consultations on legal compliance, human rights, and legal aid for non-governmental organizations and individual human rights defenders.[4] He has actively contributed to efforts against illegal logging and the illegal charcoal trade, showcasing his dedication to environmental preservation.[4]
