Nathi Singh (born 28 December 1929) is an Indian politician. He is known to be a prominent farmer Leader from Bharatpur district, in Rajasthan. He was a Cabinet Minister[1] in Rajasthan and held the portfolio of Revenue and Forest from 4 March 1990 to 15 November 1990, when he was the leader of the Janta Dal MLAs, in the coalition government of BJP and Janta Dal in Rajasthan. He was a Member of Parliament of the Rajya Sabha from April 1974 to April 1980[2] and a Member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly for four terms from 1962 to 1972, from Bharatpur[3] and from 1985[4] to 1995, from Deeg-Kumher constituency, both in the Bharatpur district of eastern Rajasthan.[4] He was associated with the Indian National Congress, Previously he was associated with Janta Dal.

He has been at the forefront of leading the cooperatives in Rajasthan, was leading various cooperatives, at the state and national level, including being the chairman of Rajasthan State Cooperative bank, and was honored with the prestigious 'Sahakar Bandhu' award, by the Indian finance minister, in the year 1998. He worked extensively to create employment opportunities for the youth, and even introduced the Right to Work private bill, during his Rajya Sabha tenure. He was also involved in several key debates, in both the upper and lower houses of the Indian Parliament, including the debate on the 33rd Constitutional Amendment in 1974,[5] 34th Constitutional Amendment in 1974,[6] and against victimization of Railway employees[7] for participation in strike.

Personal life[edit]

Nathi Singh was born in Usrani village, of Bharatpur district, in Rajasthan, in a Hindu Jat family, to Charan Singh and Janaki Devi. He earned an MA from Agra college, and an LLB. degree from Rajasthan University.[citation needed]

Nathi Singh married Vidhyawati Devi, and they had 5 sons and 5 daughters. Nathi Singh's son Subhash Singh retired from NAFED as an Executive Director, and is currently active in local politics in the Deeg Kumher Constituency, Bharatpur focusing on regional developmental issues.[citation needed]

Law Career[edit]

Nathi Singh enrolled with the Bar Council of India, as an Advocate in 1953, and was a prominent lawyer in the fields of criminal and revenue law and also for cooperatives. He practiced law in Bharatpur District court and Rajasthan High Court.[citation needed]
